The Galapagos Life Fund was founded with a very clear mission: to ensure the marine conservation of the Galapagos Islands, working hand in hand with those who inhabit this unique territory. Our work focuses on two marine areas: the Galapagos Marine Reserve, created more than two decades ago and covering 143,000 km2, and the more recently the Hermandad Marine Reserve, covering 60,000 km2.

The Galapagos Life Fund was created through a debt-for-development swap with the Ecuadorian government and established as a private, non-profit organization. Thanks to this mechanism, we have secured funding for the next 18 years—approximately $420 million USD—to guarantee the long-term conservation of our marine areas.
We are moving toward a new chapter: supporting 8 projects related to fishing, the island’s main economic activity, bringing the total to 18 projects in this first call for proposals.
