Biodiversity offsets are measurable conservation outcomes resulting from actions designed to compensate for significant residual adverse biodiversity impacts arising from project development after appropriate prevention and mitigation measures have been taken.<\/strong><\/p>

The goal of biodiversity offsets is to achieve no net loss and preferably a net gain of biodiversity on the ground with respect to species composition, habitat structure, ecosystem function and people\u2019s use and cultural values associated with biodiversity.<\/p>

Compensation is a very flexible term that can mean a number of different things. Dictionary definitions often refer to something, typically money, awarded to an individual as recompense for loss, injury, or suffering. This has the connotation of damages or some kind of award to victims. Occasionally, compensation is defined more in terms of \u2018making good\u2019 specific damage, in which case it become closer to the definition of \u2018offset\u2019 above (except that it lacks the specific requirement for achieving \u2018no net loss\u2019).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n A number of laws, standards and mechanisms require and\/or enable the use of biodiversity offsets. For example: laws requiring offsets or compensation are in\n\nplace in over countries, including US, EU, Brazil, Australia. In addition, laws enabling compensation and offsets (e.g. EIA, planning law) are prevalent in the large majority of countries, and there are\nemerging lender requirements and standards such as the\nIFC Performance Standard 6 and BBOP Principles and BBOP Draft Standard. <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n \t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
