The document aims to focus attention on the needs and challenges faced by environmental funds (EFs) and, in doing so, to provide a document that complements the training sponsored by RedLAC on strategic planning for EFs.
An attempt has been made to contextualize the examples, but in some parts examples from other sectors have been incorporated in order to illustrate the wide diversity of existing methodologies. The concepts of mission, vision, and values are analyzed, and the importance of understanding the broader context in which organizations operate from the beginning of the planning process is emphasized.
It is important to bear in mind that a strategic plan must be closely aligned with the needs and collective culture of the organization that is to develop and implement it.
It illustrates the difference between strategic plans and other types of plans that most organizations, EFs in particular, have and need to operate effectively. We
introduce the concepts behind a strategic plan. We try to answer the all-important questions: “why plan?” And it outlines some of the key steps that need to take place before planning can effectively start.
The document discusses the concepts of mission, vision and values, and emphasize the importance of understanding the broader context in which organizations function at the outset of the planning process.
