More than twelve years ago, the Sur Futuro Foundation launched its microcredit program in response to an urgent reality: rural communities in the Dominican Republic faced enormous barriers to accessing financial resources that would allow them to achieve economic security and well-being.

The program was designed with reasonable interest rates, flexible collection policies, and a strong component of technical and human support. Its goal: to strengthen capacity, promote economic autonomy, foster sustainable production, and improve the quality of life in the most vulnerable areas of the country.
With more than a decade of experience working in the region, Sur Futuro had already built a relationship of trust with the communities through programs focused on poverty reduction, sustainable environmental management, and strengthening resilience to climate change. On that basis, the microcredit program was created, aimed at people excluded from formal banking—many of them without documentation or property titles—with the purpose of providing access to fair, supportive financing tailored to their circumstances.
