Côte d’Ivoire possesses an extraordinary natural heritage; however, its forests are among the most threatened in West Africa.
Between 2001 and 2024, the country lost approximately 3.99 million hectares of tree cover, making it one of the critical deforestation hotspots in Africa. In response to deforestation and degradation, the Foundation for Parks and Reserves of Côte d’Ivoire (FPRCI) is implementing a jurisdictional Emissions Reduction Payments Agreement (ERPA) as part of the Forests Carbon Partnership Facility (FCFP) of the World Bank that combines forest conservation, reforestation, and agroforestry. The pilot program began in 2020 in the southwest of the country and involves five regional councils.
